[Critique] “Tourist Disasters”, Henri Mora

Tourism, with its corollary that is aviation, has today become an essential sector of the economy for many countries across the globe. The pandemic, which confined billions of people for many months and put millions of jobs on hold, has hit the sector hard. The fact remains that the recent lifting of health restrictions finally allowing the revival of the sector is not seen by the French essayist Henri Mora as very good news. The title of his latest book also sets the stage for a settling of accounts in good and due form. Because Tourism disasters is a veritable diatribe on an industry that is “causing havoc”, both environmental and social. By analyzing in depth the evolution of the industry since its rise in the 19e century to the present day, the author recalls the capitalist foundations of a sector solely focused on profits and financial returns. Whether we are talking about mass or alternative tourism, the phenomenon contributes to the commodification of the world and therefore to its destruction.
