[Critique] «The Ancient Truth», Maara

As Maara-Louisa Dunbar promised us last December, this full-length debut album is designed to be enjoyed in the comfort of our living room rather than on a dance floor, which doesn’t stop you from dancing at home in the listening. For those who knew the rave scene of the 1990s, The Ancient Truth will sound like a space-time capsule, the composer and DJ carefully reinterpreting the succulent British grooves of yesteryear. The first half of the album revisits the downtempo/IDM sound (there’s old Aphex Twin in the bass pattern of Nothing Sacred) by recreating the soaring atmospheres of the Café del Mar bar in Ibiza before taking us to the classic drum bass, that of the label Metalheadz (superb Just Give Me Time) and Looking Good (Oh I Remember…), to conclude with prog house compositions (sprinkled with good flashes of The KLF) with equally shimmering orchestrations. Captivating, the Montrealer manages to make these references fresh again by adding her own musical personality.
