[Critique] “Street Beat Suite”, Lorraine Desmarais Jazz Trio

During her concert highlighting her 40-year career at the last Montreal International Jazz Festival, composer and pianist Lorraine Desmarais unveiled a few titles from this 13e album inspired by another capital of Quebec jazz, Rimouski. Story of a night of partying (the funky touch of street beat) on the shore of the St. Lawrence, of the sunset (the elegant swing burnt orange in opening) until the delicate At dawn… towards the river in conclusion, she meets colleagues Chick Corea (dynamic The President loves Chick) and Paquito d’Rivera, which inspires the complex Paquito, the lively harmonies and rhythm evoking the saxophonist’s Cuban roots. The precise and lively fingering of the musician shines on Saint Germain Waltz, a rain of notes streaming over the swaying rhythm of his accompanists Camil Bélisle (drums) and Alec Walkington (double bass). Classic, composed and performed with the supreme class that is the hallmark of Desmarais. Free launch concert on February 15 at La Nef de Québec, as part of the RIDEAU event.
