[Critique] “Spiral 2 the Other Side”, Maara

Its 1990s rave classic, trance is making a strong comeback, reinterpreted by a new generation of composers who find in its sustained tempo and its hypnotic arpeggios the outlet to which the dancers abandoned themselves. Montreal’s Maara (Maara-Louisa Dunbar) is well on her way to becoming one of the most exciting purveyors of these grooves psychedelics: released on the British label X-Kalay, Spiral 2 the Other Side is already his second mini-album to be released this year. On the A side, Dunbar affixes the trance aesthetic to an electro and more classic techno rhythmic pattern (Take the Wheel Miss Sweetie), this one accompanied by one of those mysterious voice samples that we often find in his work. Side B is more psychedelic and nourishing, in the tribal percussions of forget the world and the vaguely dangerous atmosphere of the frenetic DoomQuest. Good EP, but less than Goddess Within, released in April on the German label Radiant Love. Maara will command the dance floor at Piknic Électronik on July 2.
