[Critique] “Sonatas for Violin and Piano Nos. 1-3” by Robert Schumann, Andrew Wan and Charles Richard-Hamelin

The Quebec tandem, after its integral sonatas for violin and piano of Beethoven, turned to Schumann at the very moment when the DG published the 1D Sonata of Schumann by Martha Argerich and Renaud Capuçon. Curse ? Stop hasty conclusions, because Wan and Richard-Hamelin make very beautiful music, where Capuçon, in the third movement of the sonata, jostled by the disheveled tempo of Argerich, emits disqualifying and disgraceful breathless squeaks. So here is settled the question of the upscale immediate competition. This Schumann operates a welcome sound reframing compared to the Beethovens with a more “chamber” sound, a little drier and more direct. The disc benefits from the addition of the Sonata WoO 27 compared to the two traditional sonatas. A plus, therefore, on Kremer-Argerich, the usual reference. This CD, excellent, fair and of a taste as well as a very sure balance faces however (like the Beethovens with Zimmermann-Helmchen) the competition of an absolute stratospheric success: Tetzlaff-Vogt at Ondine.
