[Critique] “SMS for Location, Vol. 5”, various artists

The movement of new club music from the African continent (afrobeat) has taken advantage of the year that is ending to establish its world domination, as shown by Burna Boy’s participation in Osheaga last summer. However, this popularity comes with a form of standardization of sound, dependent on Jamaican dancehall of the 2000s. Co-founded by Pierre Kwenders, the Montreal collective with international connections Moonshine has the great merit of breaking the codes of the genre by daring rhythms that away from the Nigerian trend, if not on songs like FonFon, with the voice of Sharabia. His fifth compilation maps (almost) everything that is exciting in African club music, while references to kuduro are revealed over the course of the fifteen original songs (DaftBeatwith DJ NK), jazzy deep house on the magnificent jamila (with De.Ville) and techno, from the percussive Goma Blue in opening, then in a more hovering way on Obia at the end of the album. A varied album full of innovative ideas.
