[Critique] “Segue to Infinity”, Laraaji

At the last Grammy ceremony, the category of best new age album was renamed Best new age or ambient album, which underlines the familiarity between the two genres that the American composer Laraaji perfectly embodied from the 1970s. Segue to Infinity collects the first recordings of the musician, made before he was discovered by Brian Eno, who invited him to create the third chapter (Day of Radiance) of his series ambient. It includes his very first album, Celestial Vibrationreleased in 1978 under his civil name, Edward Larry Gordon, but above all the essence of his very mystical musical approach, gently punctuated by the notes of his favorite instruments, the zither (electrified, processed using pedals of ‘effects), the dulcimer and the mbira lamellophone — or kalimba, title of three of the eight long pieces of the album, lasting three hours. Music or atmosphere, we listen Segue to Infinity to pick up — or meditate, if that’s your thing. Caresses for the eardrums.
