[Critique] “Rufus Does Judy at Capitol Studios”, Rufus Wainwright

Who else but Rufus Wainwright would dare? Who else could push the note and hold it like he does in the finale of Come Rain or Come Shine ? Without being an imitator, while lovingly marrying the convolutions of the impossible melodies of Irving Berlin, the Gershwins, Rodgers and Hart. Think! Judy Garland would have been 100 years old, so he treated himself to the fabulous Capitol studio, and we brought him the microphone used by the legendary singer in the same place. A few spectators, a jazz quartet, and then there you go. Congratulations. Lyricism and romanticism, Rufus knows how to put it without buttering it too thick. Despite the wear of Great American Songbookthe grace and power of the renderings revive the catalog, and we are again overwhelmed by The Man That Got Away, How Long Has This Been Going On?, and even Happy Days Are Here Again (with Kristin Chenoweth), which does not make forget the performance of Garland-Streisand, but celebrates it. Dignified and joyfully.
