[Critique] “Raven”, Kelela | The duty

Almost six years after his impressive debut album take me apartsinger-songwriter Kelela finally reappears with the blowing raven, a work of introspection, from which she emerges more mature and more sure of her place on the electronic scene as a black and lesbian musician. If he keeps intact the remarkable sensitivity of the performer, raven the camp this time in a very different musical atmosphere: after the electro-house album champ gauche, Kelela turns to the London underground, appropriating the codes of drum and bass and garage, which she clings to her roots R&B. This makes it an album that is surprisingly easier to access, with its songs flowing naturally and which are linked together by varying the rhythms. The hovering anthem Washed Away blends into the jungle sound of Happy Endingwhich leads to synthetic soul let it gothen to the almost dancehall sweetness ofOn the Run, a gem co-written with Kaytranada. It’s up to you to discover the rest of this album which will be remembered at the time of the 2023 end-of-year reviews.
