What a boss! The American Robert Trevino, 38, had pleasantly surprised in a complete Beethoven symphonies that no one expected. He then put it back in a first Ravel record. This Ravel 2 is even more eminent, and we are taken aback to hear the plastic quality of this Basque National Orchestra of San Sebastian. While expertise in French music is being lost here and there, others are apparently being created… What characterizes the Ravel of Trevino is the accuracy of his instinct: the conductor perfectly captures this sensuality which surfaces with the air of do not touch it. He keeps a cool head, but not too much, and grasps the sentences when necessary. The program of Ravel 2 is admirable, with the complete ballet My mother the goosethem Noble Waltzes and sentimentalthe antique minuetand Scheherazade, fairy overture. Boulez’s orchestration of Frontispiece in world premiere gives a particular originality to the publication. Test, you will be surprised.
