[Critique] “Portraits”, Olivia Khoury | The duty

For her new EP, Montrealer Olivia Khoury invites the listener to contemplate six small Portraits sound, each with its own particularities, its sincerity. The whole remains nevertheless of a pretty coherence, with a great delicacy in the voice and the texts in French and in English of the author-composer-performer. His musical universe is rich in a mixture of genres and influences such as pop, folk and jazz. The complexity of the instrumental choreography orchestrated by the multidisciplinary artist, who is also a dancer, and Reno McCarthy is all the more remarkable. Drums, percussion, cello, ukulele, synths, keyboards or even trumpet… all slide in symbiosis under the hands of the musicians. From this experience we note in particular the sensitive movement of I leave herean enveloping, soothing, almost undulating track, but also the caliber of the song’s swing found. The latter shines with its lucidity, its authenticity, while titles like seek And ajarreveal a certain bewitchment.
