[Critique] “Poetic Impressions” by Antonin Dvořák, Leif Ove Andsnes

The Poetické nálady (Poetic Tone Pictures in English) are a cycle of 13 pieces composed in 1889. For Leif Ove Andsnes, noted at Sony for his two recent Mozart volumes, it is the “great forgotten cycle of 19th century piano musice century “. Just instinct: long neglected, the cycles of pieces of 3 to 5 minutes, dominated by Seasons by Tchaikovsky, again attract pianists, giving them the possibility of highlighting many atmospheres. With Dvořák, the pianist wanders in a Old castle (III), has fun describing a leprechaun dance (VIII) or escapes into a painful reverie (VI). The hour of Poetic impressionsalready magnificently served by several Czechs, including Radoslav Kvapil, has therefore undoubtedly come, both this skilful music with hints of Bohemian folklore (song of spring and Peasant ballad) is “lovable”, in the literal sense. On a very brilliant piano, which one would have liked warmer and more golden, Leif Ove Andsnes indulges in the poetry of the moment with exquisite tact.
