[Critique] “Let’s Turn It Into Sound”, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith

In addition to her solo work, prolific American composer Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith has several collaborative projects, most notably with modular synthesizer icon Suzanne Ciani and, more recently, with composer Emile Mosseri, the two having delivered a silky album of pop and instrumental songs. Looks like the experience left its mark on Let’s Turn It Into Sound, as it could be described as a pop album, in comparison with all of the musician’s work, closer to the avant-garde and ambient. The rich sonorities of the synths – including the Buchla, his favorite instrument – are always at the heart of his creation, but this time in the service of dashing, and sometimes even dancing (a first!), compositions, especially on the first half of the album, which clearly reveals the mischievous side of his musical personality. The second half is more cozy, but above all inviting, accessible, in the clouds of synths of Pivot Signal and the surprising pop turn taken by Unbraid: The Merge.
