[Critique] “Labyrinthitis”, Destroyer | The duty

“My writing is instinctive, I don’t know where it all comes from,” Dan Bejar told us two years ago, shortly after the release of his album. Have We Met. His method of composition still gives exciting results from the first bars of the long It’s in Your Heart Nowan evocative and mysterious phrase that he repeats over and over in a tearful voice as the groove swirls around violins, electric guitar and synths. A moment of pure grace like we find a few others on this thirteenth album that the Vancouverite describes as his strangest – in terms of lyrics more than in terms of music. In this record where theatrical rock-new wave songs and disco-funk explorations intersect (June, The States), Bejar once again relies on the arranging and directing talents of John Collins to help him find meaning in his sentences that make us think long after hearing them: ” Year explosion is worse / A hundred million words / And that is maybe too many words to say “, he launches on The Last Song.
