[Critique] «JS Bach, Clavichord», András Schiff

Oh, a new record from András Schiff! And in Bach, too… But do we really have to follow him in all his rantings? The Hungarian pianist is passionate about instruments, including old ones. He therefore wanted to play certain works, until the Chromatic fantasy and running away BWV 903 and the Ricercar at 3 of The musical offering, on a clavichord. We hope he had fun, because we, this auricular crucifixion, will remember it for a long time. For a jaded performer, it is certainly exciting to try new things on an instrument dating back to the XIVe century which reached its peak in the 16the. But for the listener? András Schiff writes: “At first listen, the sound of the clavichord may seem unfamiliar and strange, but gradually you will get used to it. A new world will then open up, like an oasis of calm in our noisy and troubled times. Well no: this patent that squeaks, which does everything less well and even escapes the unsightly “zdoïng” (Invention noh 3) gets on our nerves!
