[Critique] “Homo comfort”, Stefano Boni

Italian anthropologist Stefano Boni points out in the introduction to his thought-provoking essay that our frantic quest for a cozy, effortless existence contributes to our own alienation. “The search for a way of life free from any form of constraint or fatigue has become an absolute ideal”, he notes in his book, which highlights the disastrous consequences of a daily life increasingly dependent technologies. The loss of autonomy to the benefit of machines and hyperconnected tools has serious and multiple consequences, explains the essayist, including in the relationship that man has with nature, the representation of which is increasingly imaginary for him. We understand better why societies, so distant and disconnected from the living, have so much difficulty reacting to the destruction of ecosystems. Nothing is lost yet, however, claims Boni, who lists over the chapters a number of practical solutions. But are we ready to sacrifice a few parcels of our comfort to regain our humanity?
