[Critique] “Happy Child”, Carmen Jaci

A nice surprise box, this first album from the young composer and sound designer Carmen Jaci. The Quebecer based in the Netherlands puts to music what will be interpreted as a happy childhood by merging acoustic sounds (the voice, in particular, on Oh Ah Eh I Ah Oh And Assemblies), the eclectic noises reminiscent of those of the toys of our memories and the synthesizers with a parsimony, an attention to detail and spatialization which reveals the musical training of the composer. Eight sparkling vignettes that evoke the most jovial works of Aphex Twin as well as the art of the refrain and the science of musical onomatopoeia of Perry and Kingsley (The In Sound from Way Out!, 1966), precursors of electronic music and hyperpop. More complex titles, such as Water sports And Dance lunar, at the heart of the album, approach contemporary music, the rhythms, the textures and the games of harmony proving to be richer than child’s play. Jaci will present this first album in Montreal in August, at the invitation of MUTEK.
