[Critique] “God Save the Animals”, Alex G

Prolific, the singer-songwriter Alex G, 29, launches a ninth album vaguely animated by a quest for spirituality – at least that’s what the musician announces, but as usual, the meaning of his texts leaves lots of room for interpretation. What seems clear, however, is that we are dealing with a gifted melodist, Alexander Giannascoli is also a one-man band who, for a rare time, has invited collaborators into his studio to help him produce what we will first remember as the “cleanest” album of his discography. The songs shine, the guitars and the banjos, the organs, the ubiquitous piano erasing an indie rock sound of the 1990s, the drums (sometimes electronic), the very often doctored voices, the musician appreciating the striking sound contrasts, mixing beauty and the ugly, the harmonious and the noisy, often in the same song. It is, above all, an album full of tenderness which can be listened to at once, from the first to the thirteenth song, then on a loop.
