[Critique] “Freakout/Release”, Hot Chip | The duty

The British orchestra begins its third decade with a vigorous eighth studio album, less cautious thanA Bath Full of Ecstasy (2019), evidenced by the title track, an almost rock affair reminiscent of Devo, in the sound of drums and electric guitars. The grooves disco-house are still kings in the group’s approach, but they avoid extending over long rhythmic progressions, distilling the songs to their essence. Most of the eleven new compositions can be summed up in some four minutes of heady choruses where, as always, the singular voices of Alexis Taylor and Joe Goddard bewitch. This is the spirit of their performances live which transpires in these songs with more varied musical influences, the guitars returning at a gallop on the pop pearl Guilty at the end of the album, when rap finds its place for the first time on The Evil that Men Do, a collaboration with Cadence Weapon. Old-school fans will happily rediscover Hot Chip’s epic house sound on miss the bliss, Broken or even the most tender Not Alone.
