[Critique] “Five Easy Hot Dogs,” Mac DeMarco

Mac DeMarco kicks off 2023 with Five Easy Hot Dogs, an exclusively instrumental album as sweet as it is pleasant to revel in. If we can sometimes expect to hear the candid voice of Mac DeMarco at the turn of a melody, as is the case in Gualala — the only words of the Canadian singer-songwriter that we perceive are “1, 2, 3” whispered at the beginning of the piece — the sauce without words ends up taking quite quickly. Thought in the shape of road trip musical, Five Easy Hot Dogs was written, performed, recorded and mixed by Mac DeMarco himself, in the hotel rooms of the cities he stopped in between January 15 and March 15, 2022. From California to British Columbia to Oregon, then Alberta, Illinois and New York State, the artist makes us discover his nomadic life in an almost sensual harmony, revealing the texture of the landscapes where he finds himself. Thus, in Victoria and Rockawayfor example, you can almost make out the waves on the shore…
