[Critique] “Everyone for himself”, Lwazo Sirois and the last rodeo

Intro harmonica Morricone. The tone is set. Borrowing assumed, approach freely consented: this first complete album by Guillaume Lwazo Sirois and his posses beautiful bandits de grand chemin is a heterogeneous loot, gleaned from crossing stagecoaches, from bivouacs where stories burn. Solitude as a house, in unbridled bluegrass, thus testifies to not always fruitful outfits. And treasures: Lwazo and his Zwasillons sometimes seized the ritornellos themselves, whose take Me Home, Country Roads by John Denver, appropriate and adapted to the Mauritian region. The graves of the late Townes Van Zandt, Johnny Cash and Michael Nesmith were similarly plundered. For a good cause, argues Lwazo: it’s always about reviving, not debasing. Thereupon, the director-musician André Lavergne (from the tandem Dans l’shed) took care of the grain. Authenticity guaranteed, heritage respected. But pleasure no less assured: original or patched pieces, it’s the ride that counts.
