[Critique] “Do well and be happy. Selected pieces 1997-2022”, Stéphane Crête

Stéphane Crête recollects here about forty texts written between 1997 and 2022. In a controlled writing, he tackles several subjects without detour, does not get caught up in any flower to say – sometimes yelling with big well-felt coronations – the failings of a society. Comedians go under the knife in particular in “Le terrorism comique”. A rebellious, caustic letter, where the author shamelessly scratches the comedian — as opposed to the buffoon who has nothing left to lose — a “model in terms of economic success […] who has no desire to upset the established order”. Staying away from the language of wood, Crête is also capable of gentleness and sensitivity. He talks about the importance of silence, or even real human relationships in “News from me”, a letter sent to a friend. More than just entertaining, Do well and be happy paves the way for discussion, reflection, and will be able to provoke some confrontations, hopefully, in this stuck time.
