[Critique] “César Franck”, Alain Altinoglu and the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra

This CD, which will be released next Friday, is undoubtedly one of the first discographic thunderclaps of 2023. The first collaboration between the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra and its new conductor, this Symphony in D de Franck is the one we’ve been dreaming of for a long time in the tradition of Paray, Munch and Bernstein. Franck’s symphony gives rise to two interpretative poles: this very French quicksilver angle of view, and a more Germanic, solemn, sometimes very impressive perspective (Giulini, Flor). From the first notes, we understand that Alain Altinoglu, as we saw him in concert in Montreal, is there, intact, on the record: he constantly stokes the musical fire and, with him, the 2e movement moves forward like a real Allegretto. Everywhere are palpable this breath, this carnal link with the music, which we remember with emotion. Consistent and important supplements, despite the excellent cursed hunter by Jean-Luc Tingaud (Naxos) recently. Only downside: the sound recording does not make the percussion biting enough.
