[Critique] “Cave World”, Viagra Boys

If we never really recover from the loss of a loved one, the Viagra Boys have fortunately been able to stick together to offer today the best album of their short discography. Less than a year after the sudden death of co-founder Benjamin Vallé, the Swedes, princes of sardonic post-punk, are once again grinding their teeth and guitars on Cave World, and it feels crazy. Hearing them thus pay homage to the antivax conspiracy theorists, on Creepy Crawlers, singer Sebastian Murphy sounding like a burlesque Nick Cave while the saxophone howls and the drums start like a train, enjoyable. The guys are still just as slobbery and trashy, but their words scratch where society itchs, and it’s as much a relief as it makes you want to dance — right from the powerful bass line of baby criminal in opening. On Troglodytethe Boys are heading for no wave, approaching with formidable efficiency the sound LCD Soundsystem on the bomb Ain’t No Thiefthen Happy Mondays on the surprisingly groovy Big Bhey. Vacationers, put on sunscreen and Cave World in your ears.
