[Critique] “Built Near the Water”, Lulu Hughes

Of course it’s blues songs, this fourth album by Lulu Hughes, like the previous ones, but with all sails out. Across the horizon, deep in the forest, glade blues with light. The instrumentation is distributed from one end of this large stage to the other, the choirs come from everywhere, the trees serve as arches in this cathedral of music. Lulu Hughes’ voice inhabits the space without invading it, each note carries and resonates. Rick Hughes and Dan Georgesco are there, of course, the great rallying of the living forces includes Pierre Fortin, Alex McMahon and Dan Thouin. The great team. And Lulu sings the rollingstonian rock of the great departure (On My Way) with the same quiet determination as the Bee Gees (How Can You Mend a Broken Heart): it’s both the album of combat and acceptance, of beauty that prevails over illness, at least for the time of listening. An extended time. Just let the record play in a loop. And everything is reborn.
