[Critique] “Brahms. Symphonies 3 & 4» | The duty

Pentatone is committed to the publication (on CD and not SACD) of a complete set of Symphonies of Brahms with the Leipzig Gewandhaus and Blomstedt. The 1D Symphony really disappointed, 2e was more convincing, but not decisive. These recordings from September and October 2019 are followed by a concert in April 2021 of a completely different eminence, which seems to prove that the year 2021 was a great vintage for the Swedish conductor, especially since the publisher this time avoids put our noses on the double basses. The rebalancing in favor of the winds works wonders in the Third who, even if the Final is not the most aggressive on the market, achieves this marvelous and natural balance obtained by those who have seen and know. The 4e is in the learned and intense manner of Giulini and Haitink, not surly of Kleiber, but with a sense of inevitability that Karajan achieved in his later years. Defying the turmoil of our time, this great disc, to be listened to between melodies, reveals itself after several listenings.
