[Critique] “Blue Sea”, Carl Bastien

Director, musician, composer of soundtracks: he is still all that, Carl Bastien. But the step taken in 2020 with given everything, EP of his own delicate country-folk songs, has turned into a march forward: he is on the third path, which goes further and closer to him at the same time, a corner of Haute-Gatineau where is Blue Sea, a lake where one can create in peace, impregnable and inspiring. The songs are about that, precisely. About what happens when you isolate yourself and open yourself up to the person inside, the one who doesn’t go out often. Thus were born Mad, Vanish, time passes, River, all around Blue Sea Lake. This is how Carl Bastien sees himself: “My demons are witnesses”, he sings. The river has been crossed “for good”, no more question of “looking back”. His companion is there, he sings: it’s not about being alone, but about finding something better…together. We think of The Band in his basement at the Big Pink, in Woodstock. The right place, the best of you.
