[Critique] “Barbarian Beauty”, The Musicians of Saint-Julien, François Lazarevitch

Like Jordi Savall, Hopkinson Smith or, today, Simon-Pierre Bestion, François Lazarevitch and his Musicians of Saint-Julien have succeeded in making their discographic releases events that we are watching. The instrumental force is very modest (one per part, as in Jupiter’s recent Vivaldi concert in Montreal), but the artistic project is admirably designed. Even if it takes time to guess it, it is a Telemann CD, certainly not like the others. During a trip to Upper Silesia in 1705, Telemann depicted the music of these lands, evoking their “true barbaric beauty”. It was enough for Lazarevitch to unite his passion for classical music with traditional music. Listen to tracks 12, 13 and 14 one after the other: the finale of the Polish concerto for flutethe song Nisko slonkoand the allegro of Threesomeoh 3. Here, the “learned” reaches out to the “popular” without condescension and in the most overwhelming way. This stunning disc heals us, for a time, of human stupidity.
