[Critique] “Baby, We’re Ascending”, HAAi

Australian composer Teneil Throssell wowed us in 2020 with her EP Put Your Head Above The Parakeets. The continuation of his young career does not disappoint: this first album will be our soundtrack for the summer. Her fresh take on the sounds of an era she didn’t live in, that of hardcore/jungle, acid house and old British techno of the 1990s, goes wonderfully with her seductive harmonies, lightning pop (famous refrains on the title track and on Bodies of Water !) and his ear, very contemporary for the meticulous sound textures. It sparkles, it crackles under the eardrum, while its sustained rhythms draw us into the hollow of the night on a dance floor — there is, in Pigeon Barron at the beginning of the album, then in human-sound (which gives us flashes of Underworld, without the aggressiveness), in the jungle contours of FM and in the title track, festive and lively anthems. Baby, We’re Ascending is a tasty, euphoric and dizzying album like a slush drunk too quickly.
