Two years later force majeurea duet album with the fascinating harpist Brandee Younger, of whom he is the spouse, Dezron Douglas, composer and bassist, revisits the formula of the quartet on this live ATALAYA, collection of original compositions recorded with colleagues George Burton (Rhodes, piano), Emilio Modeste (saxophones) and Joe Dyson Jr. (drums). Classical in its foundation — one will think of the Coltrane quartet, except for the ballad Wheeping Birch featuring Cuban-born singer Melvis Santa — fresh in its execution, ATALAYA allows us to discover a tightly woven ensemble in which Douglas, a faithful collaborator of Makaya McCraven and Coltrane junior, obviously stands out, who gives himself a solo piece, Octopus, with his electric bass. Burton is remarkable there: melodic on Pinkfrantic on J Bird (where Modeste, then Dyson Jr. also shine during his dashing solo), free and unleashed on the title track, his playing deepens the bassist’s compositions.
