Manchester United coach Erik ten Hag confirmed on Friday (October 21st) that Cristiano Ronaldo refused to come on in the Red Devils’ 2-0 win over Tottenham on Wednesday. “Yes” simply replied the Dutch technician in a press conference, when a journalist asked him if the Portuguese star had refused to leave the bench of substitutes, to play against Spurs.

After the departure of the five-time Golden Ball from the lawn of Old Trafford even before the final whistle, Manchester United announced in a press release, published Thursday, its absence from the group for the trip to Chelsea, Saturday, October 22.

“What [s’est passé dans] the discussion is between Cristiano and me. The statement [du club] is also clear, I think”added Erik ten Hag, then invoking the recurrence of the 37-year-old player, already guilty of having left prematurely his teammates during a friendly match in July against Rayo Vallecano. “When it’s the second time, it has consequences. That’s what we did. We will miss him tomorrow”concluded the Mancunian coach.

In the wake of the Manchester United press release, Cristiano Ronaldo made his mea culpa on Thursday on Instagram. “I just think I have to keep working hard at Carrington. [centre d’entraînement du club], to support my teammates and to be ready for anything in any game. Yielding to pressure is not an option.” he notably wrote.
