This is a success story for European collaboration in policing. The British Scammer, on the run for ten days after overthrowing two gendarmes in Creuse, was intercepted in Belgium. In front of the Brussels courthouse, journalist Julien Gasparutto takes stock of the next steps.
The end of a run who lasted ten days for Robert Hendy-Freegard. The man, who had knocked down two gendarmes in the Creuse, was arrested on Friday, September 2, in Belgium, on the E40 motorway west of Brussels. This Briton, known across the Channel for acts of fraud on a gigantic scale, was actively sought, suspected of attempted murder on gendarmes while fleeing a health check on his canine breeding. “They had taken his papers, but the problem is that he took off with a bang and loaded two gendarmes on his hood”says a neighbor.
He must now be presented before an examining magistrate in Brussels. “The investigating judge should quickly launch an extradition procedure to send the fugitive back to France. Then, two possibilities: either he agrees to return to France and in this case, it’s a matter of days, or he refuses and in this case, the procedure will be a little longer”enlightens Julien Gasparutto, live in front of the courthouse in the Belgian capital where this hearing will take place. “On both sides of the border, we highlight the perfect collaboration between the authorities of the two countries”concludes the journalist.
