The progress is undeniable. Fraud remains contained: +0.2% last year for a record number of transactions of 32.2 million operations. Overall, these transactions are therefore more secure. This is the case, for example, for payment by bank card – the preferred payment method for the French since it represents six out of ten transactions – for which fraud has fallen by a third on the internet since 2019. For contactless, especially by telephone, the figures are impressive: for 100,000 euros of payment, fraud is estimated at only 20 euros, compared to 60 previously. Even instant transfers are more secure, while the French use them more and more each year.

The check, which has gradually become the weak link, is also seeing the amount of its frauds drop: – 8%. It must be said that since 2020, banks have been reporting and stopping dubious check deliveries, which helped prevent more than 220 million euros of potential fraud last year. But the problem persists since these same banks persist in sending their customers, by mail and without warning them, blank checkbooks that get lost and, above all, are stolen. The Banque de France is campaigning so that customers at least have the choice of being able to pick up their checkbook from their secure bank branch.
