They abound on the coasts, and are sometimes even invasive. However, seaweed has a future in fashion.
In the Gulf of Morbihan, in the south of Brittany, your feet in the seaweed. It is here that Violaine Buet draws its aspiration and its material: the seaweeds. Artist and designer, she comes to collect them and then transport them in textile material. “I grew up on the rocks and wanted to work with something alive”, explains Violaine Buet. It is in his workshop that the magic happens. His secret? A method of treatment to maintain the flexibility of the algae. She even seems alive.
Each of his creations has a characteristic. “Now I know the algae that I should use for the urge I have at the moment”, adds the artist. Woven, assembled, embroidered, natural or colored, the artist multiplies the explorations. “Seaweed can quickly turn kitsch. She’s very organic and a little bit crazy. The weaving with rigor and structure gives it a frame and I find that it looks good “, report the designate.
