Since 1850, the tradition of crackers has illuminated the holidays of the British. These little candy-shaped surprise packets are a popular hit in the UK.

Together, we pull the big candy on each side hard enough for it to burst and reveal its contents: a crown to dress up and a riddle. Surprise gifts that the English love, especially during the holidays. “Inside there are jokes – not funny, but that’s what is funny!“, quipped a British passer-by. The surprise bag has been handed down from generation to generation.”I’ve always had crackers with my family, and later my kids will have them too“, comments a woman.

The tradition is such that some families make their own crackers. Like Jessica Stove, at home with her son Toby: “Ours are reusable so they can have them, and their children too, because they can last a lifetime. These crackers, which men offered to women, were basically a romantic heirloom from the Victorian era. The tradition has since been reinvented by the British, and is not in danger of dying: more than 150,000 crackers are open. every year.
