A study on the mental health of young French people reports an increase in suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts among young people aged 18 to 24.

Public Health France published a study, conducted in 2021, demonstrating an increase in suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts among young French people, aged 18 to 24. “Covid has accentuated an important movement”, explains the professor of child and adolescent psychiatry at Paris Cité University, Marie Rose Moro. If the first studies on the mental health of young people, during Covid, focused on adolescents, the professor indicates that “this question of the loss of the will to live also concerns young adults, with a very significant increase in emergencies around this”.

Young adults don’t know where to turn

The professor has noted the increase in young adults in distress in recent years. She assures that more and more young adults are struggling to find “places of comfort, places of listening and treatment”. Marie Rose Moro insists on the fact “to say ‘I have lost the will to live’ is as dangerous as not saying it. We must take it extremely seriously”.
