COVID-19: Workplace infections have doubled in Montreal

The number of cases of infection reported in the workplaces has more than doubled in one week in the metropolis, reveals the very latest weekly report on active outbreaks released by the Regional Directorate of Public Health of Montreal.

The number of workplace infections jumped from 110 cases last week to 232 cases as of Dec. 7, and these new infections are associated with as many as 48 outbreak sites.

This is the highest number of cases reported since the end of the 3rd wave, on June 8. This number exceeds that reached at the start of the school year, when a surge in infections was observed in mid-September in the metropolis.

The workplace outbreaks that generated these dozens of cases, however, are concentrated in the manufacturing and processing sector. Three outbreaks alone generated 115 contaminations, of which only one, which occurred in the west of Montreal, is responsible for no less than 78 cases of infections.

Outbreaks also affected, but to a lesser extent, the business and personal services sector (30 cases) and manufacturing (20 cases).

The bulk of infections, however, continue to be concentrated in schools (484 cases) and daycare services (181 cases) where children are still not vaccinated.
