The Netherlands are the first in Europe to decree containment during the holidays, to stop the fifth wave and the explosion of cases of the Omicron variant. Non-essential stores, restaurants, cinemas, theaters did not open Sunday, December 19.
The streets are deserted, the atmosphere is heavy and the businesses are closed a few days before Christmas. This is the image that the Netherlands have been offering since Sunday, December 19. “It’s not great, but it will last a month we should survive”, testifies a Dutchman from Amsterdam. “It’s very strange, at the market yesterday, there were a lot of people and now it’s very quiet, it’s very strange”, adds another.
Since this Sunday, December 19 and until January 14, non-essential stores, restaurants, cinemas and theaters have closed. These new health restrictions are a blow to the country’s economy. “I think there are big losses. The tickets are not the same on the bakery compared to the restaurant. We are back to a containment stage as in 2020”, explains Julien Manaira, French restaurateur in Amsterdam.
