COVID-19 – Public Health Warning: The Omicron wave is not over

Quebec is not immune to an increase in hospitalizations linked to COVID-19, say public health authorities.

The Associate Vice-President for Scientific Affairs of the National Institute of Public Health of Quebec (INSPQ), Éric Litvak, said that “unfortunately” the Omicron wave is not over.

Mr. Litvak pointed to a risk of an increase in the number of cases among young people who could then transmit the virus to older people, which would have an impact on hospitalizations.

The possibility of an increase in hospitalizations will depend in particular on the number of contacts, following the relaxations announced recently, as well as on the effectiveness of the third dose.

At his side, the interim national director of public health, Luc Boileau, was cautious.

“We can go to a situation that is more at risk,” he said.

Mr. Boileau bet on the caution of the population to minimize the risk of an increase in cases.

Public health authorities took stock this Wednesday as part of a press conference without elected officials, a new practice inaugurated last week.

Further details will follow.
