Ontario was reporting 438 intensive care patients with COVID-19 on Monday, for a total of 2,467 people hospitalized with the virus.
This is an increase of 26 intensive care patients and 48 hospitalizations since Sunday. The Ministry of Health recalls, however, that not all hospitals communicate their data on weekends.
There were 12 new coronavirus-related deaths in Ontario.
On Monday, 9,706 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in Ontario, but Public Health recalls that, as in Quebec, the real number of cases is probably higher, since screening has become less accessible.
Provincial data shows that 81% of Ontarians aged five and over received two doses of the vaccine and 87% received at least one dose.
Toronto commuter trains affected
Sick leave and staff isolation due to COVID-19 are forcing the GTA commuter rail company to cut services. The Metrolinx agency, which operates the “GO Transit” network, says its workforce is currently down 20-30%, on average, due to the rapid spread of the Omicron variant.
Metrolinx believes that absenteeism should increase as more people become exposed to the variant. In an effort to “protect essential transport services”, the agency immediately cuts service by around 15% across the network.
The agency adds that it hopes to maintain “hourly service or more” to the extent possible. Metrolinx also expects ridership to remain low as many Ontarians work and attend school remotely.
