Faced with the marked increase in COVID-19 cases due to the Omicron variant and the rise in hospitalizations, the mayoress of Montreal does not rule out re-establishing the state of emergency.
“The state of emergency is one of the possibilities, one of the tools in the toolbox. But it doesn’t solve everything, and we have to use it in the right place at the right time. But nothing is excluded at this time, “said Valérie Plante during a meeting of the city council Monday afternoon, in response to the leader of the opposition, Aref Salem. The latter called for a state of emergency to be declared for the safety of the elderly, the homeless and the vulnerable.
The mayoress indicated that her administration has frequent meetings with Public Health and various members of the government. She said she would meet the Minister for Health and Social Services, Lionel Carmant, on Monday evening to discuss the situation.
The state of emergency was lifted in Montreal on August 23, after being in place for 17 months.
