COVID-19: Health Canada approves use of Moderna vaccine for third doses

Health Canada is authorizing the use of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine for the booster dose.

The ministry had made the same announcement on Tuesday for the Pfizer-BionNtech vaccine.

The third dose of vaccine has already been administered to certain populations at risk in several provinces, including Quebec.

The National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) believes that several groups, including people over 70, could benefit from a third dose. Moreover, Quebec announced Tuesday that people over 70 could, from November 16, make an appointment for a third dose.

This is not compulsory and the two-dose vaccination is sufficient for the vaccination passport. A booster dose prolongs protection against the virus, but NACI believes that two doses provide sufficient protection for the general population.

As with the Pfizer vaccine, the third dose of Moderna is reserved for people 18 years of age and over and should be given at least six months after the second.

Health Canada specifies that the booster dose of the Spikevax anticovidic vaccine, manufactured by Moderna, corresponds to half a dose of the regular vaccine, or 50 mcg.
