COVID-19: end of the mask at primary and secondary school

The government will announce on Tuesday that it is giving up imposing the mask on elementary and secondary students when school break returns, from March 7.

Public Health made this recommendation to the government on Monday evening, during the meeting of the crisis unit about COVID-19. Quebec should make the announcement in a press release during the day.

The mask will therefore no longer be compulsory in Montreal, Outaouais, Abitibi, Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean and on the North Shore as of March 7, the date of return to class after the March break.

In Laval, Quebec, Bas-du-Fleuve and Chaudière-Appalaches, school break arrives a week later. The obligation to wear the mask in class will therefore be lifted on March 14, when students return to class.

Students at the college and university levels will have to stick to the rules currently in force.

The acting national director of public health, Luc Boileau, must hold a press briefing on Wednesday. He will explain the decision of his teams about the mask and present the usual projections about the number of cases of COVID-19.

Further details will follow.
