Coutts Blockade | Sentencing for protesters postponed

(Lethbridge) Sentencing for three men convicted of helping lead and coordinate the COVID-19 protest blockade in Coutts, Alta., in 2022 has been postponed.

Alex Van Herk, Marco Van Huigenbos and Gerhard Janzen were all found guilty by a jury of one count each of mischief over $5,000 in April.

A sentencing hearing was scheduled for Friday, but Van Huigenbos’ attorney is no longer representing him.

The latter needs time to find a new lawyer, so the sentencing date will now be set for October 17.

The three men were charged for their role in a blockade that blocked cross-border traffic between Canada and the United States at Coutts for two weeks in early 2022 in protest against COVID-related rules and restrictions -19.

The maximum penalty for public mischief over $5,000 is 10 years in prison.
