Courthouse | Lawyers and staff demand better security

(Quebec) Around ten groups working in the Quebec judicial system are calling for more security in Quebec courthouses.

In a letter addressed to the authorities, they explain that their request follows the attack on a court interpreter that occurred at the Longueuil courthouse last week. A 44-year-old suspect was arrested for attempted murder in this case.

The signatories ask Prime Minister François Legault and the Ministers of Justice and Public Security, Simon Jolin-Barrette and François Bonnardel, to provide more security for themselves and for all citizens, which is not the case in this moment, in their opinion, and for a long time.

They want all courthouses in Quebec to be equipped with permanent security arches and for a sufficient number of special constables to be assigned.

This week, people who visited the Longueuil courthouse were able to observe that security measures had been implemented.

The letter is notably signed by criminal and penal prosecutors, defense and legal aid lawyers, Quebec state lawyers, special constables, interpreters and translators and members of support staff and professionals from the Quebec government.
