On the night of June 14, 78 migrants lost their lives off the coast of Greece. The toll could be even heavier. After the sinking of their ship, the Greek authorities are singled out.
On photos, we see the boat before it sinks, the bridge literally crowded. Some survivors speak of 750 people in total, including a hundred children in the hold of the ship. So far, 104 migrants have been rescued in Greece. 78 people have officially died and hundreds more are still missing. Could the tragedy have been avoided? The controversy swells in Greece and Europe.
An engine failure
The boat would have left the Libyan coast on Friday June 9 in the direction of Italy before sinking off the Greek coast on the night of June 14. At 10:40 p.m. on Tuesday, a Greek Coast Guard vessel was sailing near the fishing boat and detected no problems. At 1:40 a.m. the boat reported engine failure. At 2:04 a.m., the boat began to capsize. 15 minutes later she sank. Greek authorities say the migrants repeatedly refused help. A version contested by NGOs.
