At the beginning of the morning, the authorities had not been able to establish the sex or the identity of the person. At this time, the fire was contained.

The Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) inherited the investigation, as is the case when a person dies in a fire.

Firefighters from the Montreal Fire Department (SSIM) received the alert shortly before 3 a.m. As soon as they arrived at the building located on Gatineau Street, near the Université de Montréal campus, they launched their operations to bring the flames under control quickly.

At daybreak, the exact cause of the fire was not yet known. However, the SPVM reported that it seemed unlikely that he was of criminal origin.
