OCIRP, the Union of Provident Organizations, works for the protection of families and publishes on October 6 (Caregivers’ Day) its third study on caregivers in companies.

The annual observatory for employee caregivers aims to understand how companies and social partners could better support them. According to the study by this joint organization of annuity and provident institutions OCIRP / Viavoice, the average age of start of aid for helping employees is 35 years in 2023 – 36 years in 2022, 39 years in 2021.

42.2 years: this is the average age of helping employees

9.8 hours: this is the average help time per week. It is higher in women (10.6 hours) than in men (9 hours). In 86% of cases, the assistance concerns a family member (child, spouse, parent, other family member), loss of autonomy linked to old age: 46%, chronic or disabling illness: 24%, situation disability: 20%.

Still according to the annual observatory of helping employees, the nature of the help provided: “64% provide moral support, an emotional presence, and 59% help with domestic activities (shopping, cleaning, meals). 49% help with travel support (medical appointments) and more than half finance them themselves. The majority of employees have heard of “employees in caregiver situations”: 61% of non-helping employees and 73% of helping employees have heard of “employees in a situation of caregivers”. And finally, 52% of caregiver employees do not spontaneously consider themselves in this situation.

The expectations of helping employees are high in companies

According to the OCIRP study, which will be published on Carers’ Day, October 6, the emphasis must be placed on “financial means, timetable arrangements, the right to information on rights and support systems, intermittent leave and finally better paid caregiver leave.

The presence of helping employees within the company induces hidden costs: absenteeism and presenteeism, impact on productivity, cohesion within the company, organization of work. Taking into account these costs, expenditure devoted to supporting employee caregivers (organization and working time, information and prevention, services, leave, respite, compensation) can be an investment which, by improving the well-being of employees, their productivity and the organization of work, reduces hidden costs and enhances the value of SKILLS.”
