43 years after the attack on the synagogue on rue Copernic in Paris, which killed four people and injured dozens, the Special Assize Court sentenced the only suspect, Hassan Diab, to life imprisonment. Sophie Neumayer went to court in Paris on Friday April 21.
Hassan Diab, the sole accused of the Copernic Street attack, was found guilty of murder and attempted murder and sentenced on April 21 to life imprisonment. “The Court finds that the attack was indeed committed in the name of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and that Hassan Diab was indeed a bomber., relates Sophie Neumayer, present at the Paris court. “The victims who came in large numbers said they were proud of justice, proud to be French“, she adds.
Hassan Diab resides in Canada
The accused was not present at his trial. “He is in Canada where he lives today.”explains Sophie Neumayer. “The Court has issued an arrest warrant. It remains to be seen whether Ottawa will accept his extradition. We were able to speak with a founder of Hassan Diab’s support committee. He announces that the fight for his innocence will continue across the Atlantic.“, she concludes.
