Buckwheat, essential to produce buckwheat pancakes, could well be lacking. France consumes much more than it produces then the countrys is highly dependent on international markets. But the war in Ukraine weakens this balance. In Brittany, many campaign to extend the cultivation areas of this cereal.

It is the star ingredient of the essential Breton galette: black wheat. But it is threatened with shortage, because of the war in Ukraine. In a mill in Central Brittany which produces around 3,000 tonnes of buckwheat flour per year, the concern is there. “Today we have no stock. The stock is zero. So today, we have to produce enough to replenish a stock”believes Jean PaulicCEO of Paulic Milling.

The price of buckwheat has increased. On Thursday June 2, it exceeded 1,500 euros per tonne. “In 2013, we were more around 400-450 euros because there was a lot of buckwheat in France, a lot of foreign buckwheat. The market was rather flooded, there was stock”reports Johann Bazin, director of the creperie of Guerledan (Cotes-d’Armor). France imports between 5 and 10,000 tonnes of buckwheat per year. To replace them, Breton farmers are therefore invited to increase their production.
